The Salt Institute is the world's foremost source of authoritative information about salt (sodium chloride) and its more than 14,000 known uses. The Institute is a North American-based non-profit salt industry trade association dedicated to advocating responsible uses of salt (NaCl), particularly to ensure winter roadway safety, quality water and healthy nutrition. Associations make a difference in society. Founded in 1914, the Institute's membership consists of salt producers (manufacturers). It provides public information and advocates on behalf of its members, including use of this website. Membership eligibility is limited to companies which both produce and market sodium chloride.Salt Institute information and services benefit members and the general public including dietitians, animal nutrition professionals, water softener owners or dealers, highway safety and maintenance engineers, industry researchers, journalists, elected government policymakers and regulators and many more. Students use Salt Institute information for general background and help on science projects. The Institute also has an online multi-disciplinary curriculum for high school teachers. SI produces publications and videotapes for purchase (printed materials are generally downloadable, free)
The Salt Institute sponsors engineering and medical research, field studies and laboratory investigations on impacts of various uses of salt. Recent studies have included the contributions of deicing to winter road accident reduction, the role of sodium chloride in protecting animals' immune systems, the health impacts of worker exposure to salt dust in mining conditions, the adequacy of the national feed composition database and genetic and nutritional factors in human hypertension including identifying a simple and inexpensive test to identify "salt-sensitive" individuals who can benefit from low-salt therapeutic diets.
The Salt Institute also sponsors or co-sponsors periodic, world-wide symposia on salt manufacture and marketing. The next Symposium, the 9th, will be sponsored by the China National Salt Industry Corporation, tentatively in October 2009. You can order proceedings of the Eighth Salt Symposium directly from the publisher.
