Excellence in Storage
Proper storage of highway salt is an integral part of the Salt
Institute's Sensible Salting Program since it began in
1972. Principles of proper storage are outlined in the Institute's Salt
Storage Handbook.
To encourage proper storage practices, the Salt Institute annually confers its
Excellence in Storage Award to recognize agencies with outstanding storage facilities and
programs. If you feel you have an excellent storage facility, please
download the application form. Because Canada has adopted a new "synthesis of practice" for salt
storage, Canadians should use this separate Canadian Excellence in Storage application
form, in either English or
French. Canadian agencies, in particular, will
want to review the Synthesis of
best practice for salt storage prepared by the Transportation Association of Canada.
Investing in good winter storage is no "frill." The Excellence in Storage
Award competition is to encourage the construction and operation of sound storage
facilities which exemplify operating practices to minimize environmental concerns, promote
worker safety and assure uninterrupted winter maintenance service.
The competition recognizes several levels of achievement:
- All facilities utilizing satisfactory facilities and excellent housekeeping and
operating practices will receive a certificate honoring that achievement.
- Facilities that best represent "Excellence" will be selected by a panel of
independent judges to receive the Institute's Excellence in Storage Award. Winners receive
a plaque and ballcaps for their workers.
- Facilities with continuing commitment to Excellence, upon application, qualify for
recognition for "continuing excellence" and receive plaques recognizing their
achievement.
