Membership in the Salt Institute is restricted to salt producing companies. There are two classes of members, the distinguishing feature between them being their involvement in the North American salt marketplace where the Institute devotes a major share of its resources. Regular members are U.S. based companies; non-U.S. companies can be invited to become regular members if they have significant North American market presence. Other member companies are Associate members. Consultants to the salt industry are invited to consider affiliate membership.
Dues are based on salt sales in the U.S. and Canada. Members report such sales semi-annually to the Institute's accounting firm which maintains these reports in confidence but which produces a Statistical Report of U.S. Salt Sales and which administers quarterly invoicing of dues. Dues are based on U.S. sales. For regular members, dues are 1.9-cents per ton for bulk salt and between $0.0005109 and $0.000674 per revenue dollar for various types of packaged salt. Minimum dues for regular members are $10,000. Associate member dues are also based on the number of tons sold in the U.S. Importers of 100,000 tons or less pay the minimum dues of $4.000; this is scaled upwards for companies with larger import sales. Affiliate membership is $1,000 annually for an individual or $2,000 for a company.
Salt producers wishing to join the Institute should complete and submit an application form expressing their desire to join the Institute, a willingness to accept their membership and dues responsibilities, and including a description of their operations sufficient to establish that their company both produces and sells salt.
