Breakthrough on softener discharge to on-site wastewater systems
The February issue of Water Conditioning and Purification contains an article on "Softener Discharge Versus Aerobic Wastewater Treatment Units : Design is key -- research answers questions in the age-old debate." The article explains in straightforward terms the "age-old debate" and the historical research showing that water softener discharges into on-site wastewater treatment systems is not detrimental and may even be beneficial -- and that the earlier research left some questions unanswered.
The article recounts a 2009 Pentair research project of a new Delta Environmental wastewater treatment system and how the system satisfies NSF/ANSI standards.
Most importantly, in the conclusions section, the authors reveal information not yet available on the Delta Environmental website, namely:
Delta is confident enough in the data developed to date that it has announced it will be modifying its warranties to accept the use of Delta-approved demand-initiated, twin-tank water softening systems.
This sounds like the beginning of the end for the "age-old debate" on whether softeners should be allowed to discharge to septic systems.
