Proper storage of highway salt is an integral part of the Salt Institute's Sensible Salting Program since it began in 1972. Principles of proper storage are outlined in the Institute's Salt Storage Handbook.
To encourage proper storage practices, the Salt Institute annually confers its Excellence in Storage Award to recognize agencies with outstanding storage facilities and programs. If you feel you have an excellent storage facility, please download the application form. (pdf 1.95 MB) Because Canada has adopted a new "synthesis of practice" for salt storage, Canadians should use this separate Canadian Excellence in Storage application form (pdf 799.89 kB) , in either English or French (pdf 887.85 kB) . Canadian agencies, in particular, will want to review the Synthesis of best practice for salt storage prepared by the Transportation Association of Canada.
Investing in good winter storage is no "frill." The Excellence in Storage Award competition is to encourage the construction and operation of sound storage facilities which exemplify operating practices to protect the environment, promote worker safety and assure uninterrupted winter maintenance service.
