Integrating snowfighting into safety plans

While roadway safety professionals recognize that plowing and salting winter roads adds to their safety, not a single U.S. state traffic safety management plan today recognizes snow and ice control programs as an integral part of the overall plan to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities on our roads. Winter operations professionals, likewise, too often see their task as a road maintenance activity and fail to remind both policy-makers and the general public that their responsibilities are performed to keep roadway users safe, not protect the physical roadway itself.
