While iodized table salt provides a myriad of critical health benefits for children and adults, the Salt Institute says it should not be used as a primary defense against radioactive fallout. A person would have to consume three and one-half pounds of table salt a day to reach the 130 mg of iodine needed for protection from radioactive fallout. In China, worried shoppers have been stripping stores of salt with the belief that the iodine in salt can prevent radiation exposure from Japan’s crippled nuclear plants.

On Sept. 27, 1887, Ben Blanchard was looking for gas, oil, or coal – it’s unclear. What is clear is that he went down 705 feet, and through 225 feet of salt. The rest, as they say, is history, with Hutchinson, Kansas, becoming a major producer of salt in this country, as it is today.

It may be useful to quote Dr. M. Alderman of Albert Einstein School of Medicine, "To get to the bottom of the issue, a clinical trial comparing people told to eat less sodium to those who maintain their usual intake is necessary. It is surely safer, and probably cheaper than to ask 300 million Americans to reduce their sodium intake because of the hope that it will actually extend or improve life," Alderman said.
