Citizens tell FDA "Leave my salt alone!" as Feds mull regulating salt in processed food

Leave my salt alone!!!" Daniel Larkin, an Oregon resident, told the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Larkin, who called himself "the common salt-loving man," was one of hundreds of people who responded to the FDA's recent request for comments on the possibility of sodium reduction in packaged foods from soup to nuts.

"I do not wish the federal government to get involved in the process of regulating or even recommending the level of salt in my food. We all have individual salt requirements and are fully capable of deciding upon our own food choices," Larkin wrote.

Like some consumers, the food industry doesn't want regulation either and has found low-sodium products don't always sell well. It's asking for a gradual, voluntary program. It fears that consumers will reject products that don't taste good.
