High demand for road salt prompts rationing

Despite preparations, DC area snowfighters are struggling with what President Obama has termed "Snowmegeddon." Today's projected foot of snow will establish a new winter record; the current record is 54" and we had 45" entering the current storm (of course people in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan laugh since they can get that much in a week and keep things moving.

Tuesday's Washington Post story captured a choice quote that reflects a growing frustration with the pace of winter maintenance. It highlights the Salt Institute's focus on the performance of our road network. And, no, the quote wasn't from the Salt Institute; rather it was from the highway user community -- those who depend on our roads for personal and commercial mobility. In this case, answering road agencies' explanations that they are husbanding scarce supplies of road salt, the regional AAA spokesperson Lon Anderson responded:

"I'm really not sympathetic when they say they're trying to conserve their supply," Anderson said. "Conserve for what? Next week's snow that may or may not happen? They need to do what they need to do to keep us moving today and tomorrow. . . . Mother Nature has come prepared for war. Looks like our local governments want to hold the troops back some."
