While iodized table salt provides a myriad of critical health benefits for children and adults, the Salt Institute says it should not be used as a primary defense against radioactive fallout. A person would have to consume three and one-half pounds of table salt a day to reach the 130 mg of iodine needed for protection from radioactive fallout. In China, worried shoppers have been stripping stores of salt with the belief that the iodine in salt can prevent radiation exposure from Japan’s crippled nuclear plants.
