Alexandria, VA—The Institute of Medicine (IOM) today released a review of studies that examine links between sodium consumption and health outcomes. The review raises questions about possible harm caused by sodium reduction efforts and recognizes that blood pressure is only one of many factors that should be considered in evaluating dietary changes. The IOM report also suggests that more research is needed, in light of studies which indicate negative effects from reducing sodium to very low levels.
“We are pleased to see that the IOM report has recognized that lowering sodium intake too much may actually increase a person’s risk of some health problems. IOM’s recommendation that more study is needed is a positive first step toward a more objective dialog about the complex effects of sodium reduction on overall health,” said Lori Roman, Salt Institute President.
According to Salt Institute Vice President of Science and Research, Morton Satin, “It is good to see that this report cautions against drastic sodium reduction efforts to get people to consume dangerously low levels of sodium of 1500 mg a day. There is no scientific justification for population-wide sodium reduction to such low levels and the recognition by the IOM experts that such low levels may cause harm may help steer overzealous organizations away from reckless recommendations.”
