. U.S. salt sales
grew steadily in 2004 in every market except winter roadway maintenance, according to
figures released by the industrys trade association, the Salt Institute. U.S. salt producers sold 27.7 million tons of salt
last year, worth $1.3 billion.
If we hadnt seen a predictable 3
million ton decline in highway sales due to a moderate winter compared to 2003, we would
probably have set a new sales record, explained Salt Institute president Richard L.
Hanneman. He noted that sales of food salt,
water conditioning salt, animal nutrition salt and salt for the chemical industry all
registered gains. While food salt
sales reliably track population growth, Hanneman noted, the gains in sales to the
water treatment and chemical industries reflect the strength of the economic
recovery over the past year, especially in manufacturing.
