      SALT INDUSTRY SAFETY RECORD IMPROVES

ALEXANDRIA, VA, March 22, 2004 – Safety at 95 North American salt production facilities improved significantly in 2003, the industry’s trade association, the Salt Institute, announced today.   Salt companies have reduced lost time accidents by nearly half over the past two years.  With nearly 12 million hours worked, 37 workers suffered a lost-time injury (down 16% from the 44 last year and 45% from the 67 in 2002).

The salt industry’s safest production plants and companies were honored as winners of the 2003 Salt Institute Safety Recognition awards.

Morton Salt, a Chicago-based division of Rohm and Haas, was honored for its industry-best company safety record.  Among smaller companies, the best overall safety records were earned by United Salt Company, Houston, TX, and American Rock Salt Company, Hampton Corners, NY.

Among the safest individual facilities, these won top salt industry honors for lowest incidence rate of reportable injuries:

                Mining                                Morton Salt, Fairport, OH

Large Processing                Morton Salt, Manistee, MI

Small Processing                Sifto Canada, Goderich, ON

                Terminals/Warehouses              Cargill Salt

And honored for lowest severity rate of reportable injuries:

Mining                                Morton Salt, Weeks Island, LA

Large Processing                Morton Salt, Rittman, OH

Small Processing                Cargill Salt, Watkins Glen, NY

                Terminal/Warehouses              Cargill Salt

Salt Institute President Richard L. Hanneman commented,  “Safety is a team effort.  And safety is a win-win proposition.  Our goal is no lost-time accidents and these safety achievements represent hard work on the part of both management and workers.  It’s an investment that pays off for everybody.”  He noted that work-hours had increased due to heavy demand for winter deicing salt and that such all-out production efforts create special safety challenges.

Editor's notes:   The Incidence Rate is computed based upon number of reportable injuries which are based on all work-related injuries/illnesses requiring medical treatment beyond first aid, and first aid cases involving restricted duty.   The Severity Rate is computed based upon number of workdays lost due to work-related injury/illness.
