Spurred by a 45% increase in highway salt tonnage in 2003, U.S. salt
producers achieved record sales revenues of $1.3 billion, up 13.3% from 2002.
The Salt
Institute reported 2003 sales results including more than 30 million tons sold. The all-time record was set after the Blizzard of
1996, 32.9 million tons were sold that year; 2003 was the third-highest tonnage recorded.
Highway sales
soared by six million tons to 19.4 million, second behind the 20.1 million tons used in
1996; highway salt sales revenues set an all-time record -- $479 million. Revenues from the sale of water conditioning salt
also reached an all-time high of $322 million. Food
salt sales advanced 2.5% to their second-highest historic record, 1.559 million tons.
