More than a half-century after the leading countries like the U.S. and Switzerland conquered iodine deificiency, vast numbers of infants are born brain-damaged for lack of iodized salt. UNICEF, with support from the World Health Organization, the salt industry and an array of public health and civil society organizations, is engaged in an urgent and priority effort to iodize salt worldwide.
