Australia, New Zealand to propose mandatory salt iodization

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced today that it will conduct a four-week public consultation in August 2006 on converting their current voluntary salt iodization program to making it mandatory for both retail purchase and use in food processing. It is unclear whether the proposal will be for all food processing or only cereal-based foods. An earlier trial in Tasmania showed the efficacy of using iodized salt in bread.
