Egyptian salt producers, health ministry team to stem IDD
On June 21, the UNICEF press office issued a "News note" entitled "Salt producers and health workers join forces to combat iodine deficiency disorder." The story recounts a recent UNICEF-organized 4-day workshop in Fayoum and the progress achieved in fashioning Egypt's campaign to ensure food salt is consistently iodized. The story notes the historic nature of the meeting. Previous efforts had collected the "usual suspects" of health officials and development agencies and, perhaps, the schools. This workshop included "for the first time, experts from the Egyptian salt industry."
That's our experience internationally. UNICEF plays a key role in organizing an anti-IDD effort, medical experts give direction and provide credibility, but a key partner in national coalitions remains those who actually produce the salt and are often responsible for its iodization and packaging.
