New Aussie solar saltworks project enters public review
Yannarie Solar, Straits Resources' brand new proposed 3 million-ton solar saltworks in Western Australia's Exmouth region has begun a public comment period on environmental impacts. The Environmental Protection Agency will accept comments on Straits' Environmental Review and Management Program (ERMP) until February 26, 2007. Among the environmental features is a zero-discharge of bitterns.
The project anticipates future expansion, no sooner than another decade, first to 4.2 million tons and eventually to 10 million tons, which would be the largest solar saltworks in the world. Currently, the 8 million ton Exportadora de Sal facility at Guererro Negro in Mexico's Baja peninsula is the world's largest solar saltworks.
